DescriptionCollection of clay pipes from 17th, 18th, 19th centuries. Fifty-two (52) clay pipes in total.
ProvenanceFound in Harrow area, surface and fieldwork finds, not excavated.
CommentsSeven on display in Museum, 1610-1770. Tobacco was introduced to England in 1573. At first it was expensive, so clay pipes were small. Over time tobacco became cheaper, and by the Georgian period pipes had wider bowls and elongated stems.
